Jan Fabre is described as a multidisciplinary artist, which is to say that he draws from a variety of talents in the creation of his work. This particular work in question, THE POWER OF THEATRICAL MADNESS, is essentially a live-performance, multi-media collage that involves performers, projected art, recorded music, choreography, and staging in a highly surrealist, somewhat Dada-istic manner to create an extremely subjective presentation. Originally staged in 1984, it toured globally through 1986, and it has been revived by Fabre as recently as 2012.The book THE POWER OF THEATRICAL MADNESS was originally published in 1986 by the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London. It is essentially a collection of black and white photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe that record some of the images that occur in the stage presentation. The book also contains thirty-five (by my count) photographs by Mapplethorpe and eight (again by my count) drawings by Fabre. The photographs were taken by Mapplethorpe in Antwerp during January of 1985; the drawings were made by Fabre as part of his creative process during 1984.Although the book is typically credited to Fabre, the real attraction is the photographs by Mapplethorpe, who was already being celebrated for his artistry at the time the photographs were made. Sad to say, though, the photographs here are not really among Mapplethorpe’s best. This is unexpected, for both Fabre and Mapplethorpe were extremists, and one would expect a collaboration to be impressive—but the photographs lack the sharpness, the high-impact quality of Mapplethorpe’s best work. It may be that Mapplethorpe found working from someone else’s vision off-putting. Whatever the case, it is difficult to see what all the fuss was about.THE POWER OF THEATRICAL MADNESS is really for a Mapplethorpe completest or for a Fabre fan determined to have photographs of the original 1984-1986 work. Recommended to them.GFT, Amazon ReviewerPosted 7-2018
