This three-volume set of the complete paintings and collages of Robert Motherwell is the last word on his varied and masterful output. The authors have created an exceptional and flawless catalogue, with highly insightful and in-depth essays and referances in the first volume, then two massive volumes with the paintings (volume two) and the collages and paintings on paper (volume three), all printed in crisp and beautiful color plates (wherever possible). The quality of the printing and binding are also exceptional; it's a set that is meant to last, both in terms of scholarship and photo-reproductions as well as to hold up physically as a set of invaluable referance books. The authors are careful not to gloss over any of Motherwell's shortcomings as an artist or as a person, and there is no doubt that Motherwell himself would have approved of this approach.The price of the set makes it a remarkable bargain as well. Art lovers of all kinds, but especially those enamored of 20th century abstract painting, will do well to be sure to secure a copy of this set while it is still in print. The investment will pay off in years of study and pleasure in the enjoyment and appreciation of Motherwell's art.
